Makati Shangri-La, Manila raised Php 227,183.23 that will be used to provide clean, potable water for an underprivileged community in Metro Manila, through its Crystals of Hope corporate social responsibility campaign in partnership with Manila Water.

The funds were turned over to Manila Water in a simple ceremony at the hotel. Makati Shangri-La’s hotel manager, Mr. Andrew den Oudsten, presented the check to Mr. Ferdinand dela Cruz, Manila Water’s group director for East Zone business operations and corporate strategic affairs.

The Crystals of Hope campaign ran from November 13 to December 31, 2013 with the intent to raise funds to install water for residents of Southville 8, an urban poor community in Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal province. Hotel employees dressed as snow maidens sold clear acrylic snowflakes – to symbolize crystallized water – to guests at the lobby.

An infographic poster illustrated where the funds would go: the small snowflake worth Php 250 was worth an average of one month’s bill of a family of five in Southville 8. This can cover basic household usage such as cleaning, laundry, drinking and taking a shower. Meanwhile, the large snowflake worth P350 was equivalent to an average of 21 cubic meters or 21,000 liters or 5,547 gallons of water. This can cover more comprehensive usage of water in an average household.

Southville 8’s residents comprises of previous informal settlers who have been relocated through the National Housing Authority. Manila Water has been able to install over 9,000 water meters for 90% of the residents. Previously, these households’ source of water came from shallow wells with very poor quality and unsustainable yield

After gauging the impact of this endeavor, the CSR team of Makati Shangri-La, Manila decided to dedicate its Christmas theme to the gift of water. Through a ceremonial tree lighting last 13 November 2014, the hotel, together with executives of Manila Water, launched Crystals of Hope as a pledge to help provide potable water for the remaining 10% of the families in Southville 8.

“It is a privilege for Makati Shangri-La to work with Manila Water on this worthwhile project,” said Andrew den Oudsten, hotel manager. “We have seen firsthand the company’s commitment to social responsibility and managing its resource – water – to benefit everyone, as is their right, to enjoy safe and potable water that can be consumed at any time of day and in all occasion."
