Manila, January 23, 2014 – Makati Shangri-La, Manila is delighted to partner with Carlo Calma, one of the Philippines’ bright young stars in architecture, interior design and visual arts, in an exclusive and inimitable sculpture commissioned specifically for Chinese New Year.
In theme for this year’s featured animal sign, the Wooden Horse, Calma has designed a wooden horse sculpture made of wood and golden-brushed laser-cut aluminum panels. The height of the sculpture at its highest tip measures 2.7 meters, while the circular base measures 2 meters in diameter. The sculpture will be available for viewing at the hotel lobby from January 30, Chinese New Year Eve, to February 9.
In creating the piece, Calma took inspiration from nature, in particular, the wood or forest element, as represented by the sculpture’s cellular organic branches symbolizing growth, and a galloping horse in gradient panels to represent movement.
Calma’s fascination in the analog and digital is very much apparent in his focus to create textural effects and ephemeral sensations for the body, mind and exterior spaces.
“In creating the Wooden Horse sculpture, I wanted to focus on this branching type of series, which is a cataloguing device of assemblages,” said Mr. Calma. “The digitally fabricated architectural sensibility of high intricacy of shadows and light perform as an embroidered growth network of interlacing tubes that can be reassembled to create larger pieces in different scales.”
The use of organic natural materials such as wood and aluminum create a distinct message of working with nature in order to create a piece that represents progress, energy, strength, resilience, grace and steadfastness – all traits of the Horse for the year 2014.
“We are quite overjoyed that young and talented visionary, Carlo Calma, has agreed to create a visual centerpiece exclusively for viewing at Makati Shangri-La, Manila in time for Chinese New Year,” said Mr. Alain Borgers, Makati Shangri-La’s Area Manager and General Manager. “For over two decades, Makati Shangri-La, Manila has established a reputation as a place to see and be seen. Having a sculpture at the most iconic and photogenic area of the hotel for a limited period will be a refreshing addition to the hotel’s activities for this festive period, and will certainly create a conversation amongst guests who appreciate art in all forms.”
Carlo Calma is an architect, interior designer and visual artist. In his early years, he studied painting, sculpture and light design at CaliforniaCollege of Arts & Crafts (CCAC) in the USA, and held a successful one-man show in Posh Salon & Gallery in San Francisco entitled “Eculer Series.” He then moved to London, UK, where he lived for eight years and graduated at the prestigious Architectural Association School of Architecture.
He has held a one-man exhibition at Ayala Museum entitled “Grammar of Movement” in 2009, which was an exploration in temporality through layering and gradations that encapsulate different types of trajectories and memory.
Currently, his works are shown in Now Gallery, Makati City. His latest series entitled “Manufactured Landscapes” can be viewed in the 2014 Manila Art Fair. This series focuses once more on his fascination between the analog and the digital – inspired by culturally, socio-driven, everyday scenarios and environment that creates play of shadow and light, and their effect that combines ephemeral and tactile beauty.
