Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu Launches “The Land Of Chocolate”

Cebu, Philippines, July 23, 2018 – Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu launches The Land of Chocolate, a signature journey to enhance the overall guest experience. It recreates a series of gracious traditions spanning from sunrise to sunset, from the native Sikwate (Hot Chocolate) traditionally served in the morning to a Chocolate High Tea that goes beautifully with a leisurely afternoon and, finally, to signature Chocolate Martinis that end any evening on a pleasantly memorable note.

This offering is the final product of two full years of careful development, and is an initiative personally overseen by the general manager, René D. Egle. A significant element of his plan was to introduce specialized chocolate sommeliers, who are now the first of their kind, both in the Philippines and within Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts.

Another highlight is a quaint garden hideaway on the resort grounds. The site of a young cacao farm and chocolate-making facilities, it is where the sommeliers demonstrate the traditional methods of creating chocolate from cacao beans before guiding guests through a chocolate tasting that is every bit as authentic and rooted in nature as the raw cacao from three different destinations – Cebu, Bohol and Davao – on display.

At Lobby Lounge, pastry chefs put the spotlight on locally sourced cacao beans. The classic Chocolate High Tea features luscious macaroons, tarts and eclairs, complemented by a selection of fresh fruits and served with premium tea or Sikwate. This native Hot Chocolate is also paired with the traditional Cebuano merienda (snack) of Biko (Filipino Rice Cake) and mango.

The Chocolate Flight is a delightful collection of sweets, such as the Almond and Hazelnut Layered Cake, Chocolate Dacquoise and the Milk and Raspberry Cake. A range of premium cacao-infused liquor and the appealingly named Cuddle in a Cup, a comforting blend of chocolate and cream, are also available on the Lobby Lounge menu.

Lastly, as an additional welcome, guests staying in the Ocean Club rooms and suites enjoy a treat of artisanal chocolate, specially created for the resort, upon arrival. A range of retail chocolate bars are also available at the Lobby Shop.

To help bring its exciting vision to life, the resort is collaborating with local partners The Chocolate Chamber and Auro Chocolate.

The sommeliers were trained in the classic art of traditional chocolate making by no less than Cebu’s chocolate queen, as Raquel Choa of The Chocolate Chamber is known. A pioneer in bringing Cebuano cacao to global attention, she is a major inspiration and was instrumental in conceptualizing the farm-to-table initiative. She is also a well-respected artist and cultural figure.

Kelly Go and Mark Ocampo, who founded the award-winning Auro Chocolate, focus on innovative, state-of-the-art processes and fresh new flavors, taking a modern and precise approach that helped refine the sommeliers’ technical skills. The Filipino bean-to-bar company empowers over 2,000 local farmers to create the finest single-origin cocoa and chocolate products. It sources its premium cacao beans from Davao in the southern Philippines and employs a distinctly artisanal approach to industrial production.
