The Mercy Field Home in Fuzhou cares for children whose parents are serving prison sentences. Shangri-La Hotel, Fuzhou began their partnership with the home in 2010. The aim of the partnership was to create a nurturing environment for the children to reside and learn in.
With these aims in mind, the hotel renovated the home's dormitories and classrooms and began a tuition fund programme for the older children, who were too old to study in the home, to attend college and provide them with job skills training.
Care and Support
Every month, hotel colleagues repair and provide maintenance work for the home's doors, windows, classrooms and water heaters. As part of the refurbishment efforts, new mattresses, pillows and quilts were provided.
Twelve colleagues worked with students from the home to build a small garden. This garden aims to provide a long-term agricultural learning opportunity and emphasise living self-sustainably.
In 2012, 14 students enrolled in the hotel’s Food and Beverage department as trainees to help them gain pre-vocational experience at the hotel. The training enhanced their understanding and expectations of a professional working environment, which will better prepare them for future careers. The training programme was tailored specially for them and included a certificate presentation upon programme completion.
