Shangri-La Hotel, Changchun used EMBRACE as a platform to address accessibility to modern facilities that would ensure high levels of education and livelihood for students of Xinjia School.
In the Yitong county of Jilin, 20 percent of middle school students drop out each year due to a lack of financial resources. Shangri-La Hotel, Changchun pledged to reduce this to 10 percent by 2015 through the provision of a strong basic education facility. The hotel raised funds and helped rebuild the school in 2009 after a tornado had hit in 2006. In 2010, the hotel donated over 2,000 books and 13 computers to Xinjia School to set up a library.
Farm to Table
In order to alleviate poverty beyond the school walls, the hotel has embarked on developing a chicken farm and vegetable green house in partnership with local farming communities. Approximately 2,000 chickens are organically raised on a yearly basis and are served in the hotel’s restaurants as well as the vegetables. This has provided a steady income for over 40 farmers in the village.
As part of the hotel's continued efforts to support Xinjia School, it organised the ninth Charity Cabbage Walk. The charitable walk was followed by an evening dinner attended by over 380 guests. An auction was held to help raise funds in aid of the students’ welfare and livelihood.
