Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa has adopted the community of Tingo as its EMBRACE beneficiary. Tingo is located on the island of Olango, which lies directly across from the resort, and is home to the Tingo Elementary School, one of the under-performing schools in the region. Projects are focused on school upgrades and student welfare. The resort hopes to maintain an environment that is healthy and conducive to learning, and allows the children to realise their potentials, nurture their skills and secure sustainable careers in the future. Tingo is a community of almost 1,000 families situated across the resort itself, often playing host to guests who enjoy water sports or island-hopping.
Cooking for the Future
Cooking workshops for children are regularly conducted by the resort’s kitchen team. Along with teaching practical culinary skills and sharing recipes for simple, nutritious meals, resort colleagues also impart the value of healthy living and balanced diets to the Tingo students.
The E-Learning Centre
The resort recently constructed an e-learning centre for the school, supplying it with educational materials. Basic computer lessons will be conducted by resort employees. The e-learning centre is meant to equip Tingo students with the skills they need in a modern, digital environment.
Apart from school furniture donation, the resort is currently working on the construction of a school cafeteria, as well as the establishment of a scholarship programme. Other ongoing activities include training in community hygiene and pest control, and subject mentoring.
