Shangri-La's Fijian Resort & Spa Celebrates Earth Day 2013

Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island, Fiji celebrated Earth Day 2013 with a mangrove planting event, celebratory cake and presentations to guests as well as student and staff from the Sigatoka Special School and staff volunteers from the Resort.

The day also marks the fourth anniversary of Earth Day Thursday that was launched at the Resort in 2010. Since then there have been more than 10,000 visitors to the Shangri-La Marine Education Centre, more than 2,000 mangrove seedlings have been planted by guests, students and staff on the mangrove flats surrounding Yanuca Island; and restoration work has been carried out on close to 1000m2 of coastal forests and 600m2 of reef.

“The annual celebration of Earth Day is but one of the ways that we hope help us raise awareness of our environment and celebrate the beauty of Fiji’s natural and cultural heritage,” said the Resort’s General Manager, Michael Monks. “Through this and several ongoing activities we are proud to partner with our guests, students from our community, staff volunteers and a number of organisations in our district who have played an integral role in the conservation and restoration of Fiji’s natural surroundings.” Monks said awareness was an important part of the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa conservation efforts.

“We believe that our ongoing efforts in raising awareness and encouraging a commitment to the ongoing preservation of Fiji’s natural heritage amongst the youth, is vital. This is further enhanced in our partnership with key stakeholders such as the Natural Trust – Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, Kula Eco Park and OISCA. These organisations have been closely involved in advocating for conservation in our community for some time and we are proud to be associated with them.”

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts remains committed to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner while balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders. In striving to be a leader in corporate citizenship and sustainable development, a corporate-level CSR Committee drives the company’s initiatives in the strategic areas of stakeholder relations, the environment, health and safety, the supply chain and employees. Under the umbrella of “sustainability,” Shangri-La’s social responsibility programme consists of the two elements of “embrace” and “sanctuary.” “Embrace” focuses on Shangri-La’s Caring People Project, which aims to promote the highest level of education and health support in underprivileged communities.

In “sanctuary,” the programme concentrates on Shangri-La’s Care for Nature Project, which promotes the conservation and restoration of biodiversity. For more information, please access the CSR section on
