Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou Launches Paperless Check-in and Check-out System

Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou is pleased to announce the introduction of a paperless check-in and check-out system, a total investment of Rmb400,000, and it is the first in the city of Suzhou.  This low‑carbon initiative is part of the hotel’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme and follows this year’s ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management System.

The new technique has changed the traditional check-in and check-out process by enabling all information related to room reservations to be displayed on a tablet computer.  Guests simply sign on the tablet with a stylus and receive their bills electronically at a preferred e‑mail address.  This “green” system simplifies and facilitates the check-in and check-out procedure and enhances guests’ overall stay experience.

The new system is expected to greatly reduce paper wastage and result in a projected savings of 70,000 pieces ofpaper annually, based on last year’s usage merely on check-in and check-out.  In addition, the hotel has put paperless techniques into the reservations system to support and does its part in its commitment to CSR.

“As a certified ISO 14001 hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou strives to provide guests a comfortable stay while actively protecting the environment with regular ‘green’ activities as well as energy-saving and emission-reduction project,” said Ms. Susanna Li, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou.

The following are some of the activities the hotel has undertaken in this respect:

From December 2011, the hotel has removed shark’s fin from its restaurants and ceased to accept new orders for shark’s fin products in banqueting.  It has also removed bluefin tuna and Chilean sea bass from its menus.

The hotel uses biodegradable and compostable plastarch material (PSM), which degrades by around 70 per cent in 80 days, for all toiletry packaging.  It also recycles used toiletry items for cleaning purposes and offers low-temperature detergent.

The hotel has installed LED light bulbs at car parking areas and offices.

In 2013, the hotel invited guests to join the charity sales of used goods to avoid wastage and subsidise poverty alleviation projects.

The hotel advocates “green travel” and successfully completed the Suzhou Leg of “Ride for Hope”, a Shangri-La CSR Tour from Shenzhen to Shanghai that raised over RMB150,000 from Suzhou for a group of villagers living in Guangxi Autonomous Region, Shenzhen Blue Ocean Conservation Association and the WILL Foundation, to help them build cellars, work on conservation and give orphans hope and a future, respectively.
