Chinese New Year Hampers at Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing

At 3pm on 14 January, 2015, Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing held a special activity in its function room. Ten students and media friends learned how to wrap steamed stuffed buns. Although the process looked easy, it was not, but everyone fun doing it.

People in Nanjing love to eat steamed buns, and they are good at picking the pretty looking one from a plate. The one that always got chosen is white, has plenty of delicious stuffing and wrapped up nicely.

The students who participated in this activity at Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing were all confident that they could wrap a steamed bun and wanted to try it. The hotel’s Chinese Executive Chef – Mr. Hou Xin Qin, demonstrated the process step by step in front of the students.
First, the paste must be rolled out. Holding it by stuffing is added in the middle. It is ten rolled, while constantly adding flour. The wrap up is a very important process. Clamping the thumb and forefinger, it is kneaded and turning the hands, let it attach to a wrinkled. This process requires skill to produce a nice looking steamed bun.

Although the students did not yet have this skill, they all enjoy the activity thoroughly.

“My grandma will do the bun for me at home during the festival season. I don’t know it is so complicated. Now I learn the skill and can assist to do for my parent and family members.” A student said.

A steamed bun symbolizes caring and happiness from the heart. During the Chinese festival season, people dedicatedly deliver these gifts to clients, friends and family members. For this occasion, Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing has prepared four categories of Chinese New Year hampers: 

Steamed Bun and Rice Cake Hamper
This hamper includes seven kinds of steamed buns (six pieces of each kind), two fried glutinous rice cakes and two fish-shape rice cake. It is priced at RMB199 per box.  

Homemade Poon Choi
This hamper is made by Chef Hou and needs to be ordered in advance. The hamper includes meatballs, egg dumplings, fish balls, roasted goose, pork rinds, lotus root, bamboo shoots, mushroom and prawns, sea cucumber, fresh abalone, and quail egg. It is priced at RMB699 per box.
Seafood Hamper
This hamper includes wild bamboo shrimps, smoked salmon, American scallop, Germany butterfly fish, Iceland red fish, smoked wild Alaskan salmon, Alaskan hake skewer and Patagonian argentine red shrimp. It is priced at RMB1, 299 per box.

Prime Seafood Hamper
This hamper includes south pole cod, Patagonian argentine red shrimp, smoked salmon, Alaskan red grouper, Alaskan crab, smoked American salmon, wild bamboo shrimp and Alaskan hake skewer. It is priced at RMB1, 599 per box.

As it is the hotel’s first time to offer the Chinese New Year hampers, group order are entitled to more benefits.
