Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian Organises Bazaar For Earth Hour

On 23 March 2013 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian, the only IS0 14001 certificated hotel in town, participated in the worldwide Earth Hour event organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature for the fifth consecutive year.  In conjunction with the 2013 Earth Hour slogan, “My Green Week,” the hotel not only switched off all the lighting and equipment but also organised a bazaar in the hotel lobby for the first time.  The bazaar encouraged the hotel’s in-house guests, corporate clients and partners to participate in the Earth Hour activity and facilitated their commitment to environmental protection.

All guests staying in the 563 guestrooms and 195 residences were encouraged to join this global event with in-room letters recommending minimal use of electrical appliances in guestrooms, including personal mobile phones, lights and air conditioning.  From 5 to 9 p.m., guests could purchase all kinds of commodities at the bazaar, including special hotel amenities and articles for daily usage and environmental protection.  Meanwhile, the hotel demonstrated the green lifestyle to colleagues and guests in keeping with “My Green Week,” including eating vegetables on Monday, using reusable shopping bags on Tuesday, not using a car on Wednesday, using personal chopsticks on Thursday, leaving no food uneaten on Friday, loving animals on Saturday and undertaking outdoor activities on Sunday.

During Earth Hour, the hotel saved nearly 900 kilowatts of electricity by turning off the lights in 21 areas, including the hotel lobby, all the restaurants, the function rooms and the Grand Ballroom.  The saved energy would be enough to power a lift for 176 hours, or a guestroom for 1,330 hours, or a restaurant for 63 hours, or the 1,664-square-metre Grand Ballroom for 17 hours.

Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian demonstrates its energy saving and low carbon lifestyle in daily life.  In 2010, the hotel successfully launched an LED lighting system, which saves nearly RMB 1 million every year.  Additionally, bed sheet and towel reuse cards are displayed in guestrooms and bathrooms to encourage guests to use bed sheets and towels more than once in order to save water and reduce emissions.  Meanwhile, the hotel has implemented garbage separation, double-side paper printing in the office and energy saving in the daily operation.
