Traders Upper East Hotel, Beijing held a one-day activity called Dandelion Day for the students of Dandelion School to let them experience the hospitality life and its work. More than 45 migrant farmers’ children and students from Dandelion School are beneficiaries of the Big and Small Friends Programme of the Kwok Foundation. Twenty-five CSR volunteers and Big friends from the hotel also participated.
The students managed to arrive at the hotel at exactly 10 a.m., despite the long distance travel and traffic. Mr. Teo, hotel general manager, welcomed the studentsand shared his primary experience when joined the hospitality industry when he was around 18 years old. The first part of all-day activity was a hotel orientation given by the training manager. A game was specially organised to get the children to know each other well. This was followed by an outside fire-fighting training by our Security volunteer. The students learned how to use the extinguisher to kill a fire and deal with different fire incidents. During lunch, the staff restaurant served the small “staffs” their usual but special big lunch.
In the afternoon, the children were divided into three groups to take part in the bed-making training, table-setting training, Western dining manners and cookie baking class. The children were surprised at how the housekeeper made a perfect bed in three minutes, curious about the different glass sizes for red and white wines and became excited to design the different shapes of cookies.
Some of the children showed a sense of humour when asked what the responsibility of Sales and Marketing was. They answered “selling vegetables”, making everyone laugh. The highlight of the day was a competition of serving bottles of water using a tray.
The day was full of fun and helped the children realise that nothing is easy when it comes to being a hotelier. After the training, the children were so proud of themselves when they saw the clean bed, set-up table and sweet cookies they made.
Although the activity only lasted one day, the children were so excited to share their feelings and gain with friends. This one-day experience may have been a short one in their lives, but it was their first time to experience a social position and has given them one more choice to have a better life.
