Shangri-La Hotel, Beihai Celebrates Earth Hour "Switch Off, Blue On"

Beihai, China, 30 March 2015 – In response to ‘Switch Off, Blue On’, the theme of Earth Hour 2015 in China, Shangri-La Hotel, Beihai celebrates Earth Hour on 28 March 2015 by organising a ‘Run for the Future’ long distance race and a Lights Off Party.

Climate change is the focus of Earth Hour 2015.  To respond to the call to help mitigate climate change, Earth Hour in China focuses on mitigating fog and haze by launching ‘Switch off, Blue on’.  WWF believes that switching to renewable energy is the only sustainable option for the energy supply.

‘Fun for the Future’ Long Distance Race
The race will be held at 8:30 a.m., 28 March 2015.  Participants will start from the hotel’s outdoor parking lot and reach Gaode Bridge before they return to the starting point.  The racing distance is approximately 5 kilometres.  The activity aims to encourage people to enjoy a low-carbon life style.  Participants include hotel staff, guests, partners and the citizens who support this activity.

The hotel has also shared Earth Hour information though social media channels and encouraged hotel guests to take part in this activity and its staff to go to work on foot or by riding a bike or taking the bus.

Lights Off Party
The party will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will include a charity bazaar, low-carbon cocktails and unplugged concert.  All the revenue from the charity bazaar will be deposited into the hotel’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) foundation.

Guests can enjoy a low-carbon cocktail and snack prepared by the hotel, watch a dancing show by the hotel staff and an unplugged concert by Beihai Huafei Musical School.  The party aims to call more people take part in Earth Hour, switch off the lights and electrical equipment in their homes and get together to enjoy a low-carbon lifestyle.  From 8:30 t0 9:30 p.m., the hotel will switch off all lights in the hotel’s exterior, public areas and restaurants.

Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement organised by WWF to unite the people to protect the planet.  Engaging a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues, Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007.  Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide, and the one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now-larger movement.
