Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou Extents New Year Greeting to Welfare Institution

Management and volunteers from Shangri-la Hotel, Baotou visited Baotou Children’s Welfare Institution on 10 January 2014. They did decoration for the coming Chinese New Year and cooked dumpling for those children.

The hotel management and volunteers pasted red couplets, Fu characters and paper-cuts on walls, doors and windows. Red lanterns are also hanged in rooms.  A red and auspicious Spring Festival atmosphere came out through the cooperation of hotel staff and children. Children were all excited that they could decorate “Embrace Supermarket” and “Shangri-La Family” they loved. Hotel chefs also cooked dumplings for children to celebrate the coming Chinese New Year in advance. Dumpling is a traditional dish eaten on Chinese New Year's Eve. Hotel staff and children ate warm dumpling in their small canteen like a special family reunions. Hotel also brought plenty of candies and fresh fruits as gifts to children.

Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou has launched a 15-year embrace project with Baotou Children’s Welfare Institution on April 2010.  It engages in the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy through volunteers, infrastructure support, fund-raising, life skills training and hotel apprenticeships.  To improve the living skills and independence of those children, hotel built a simulative supermarket in the Welfare Institution at the end of 2011.

As part of the effort to support with Baotou Children’s Welfare Institution, Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou launched the ‘simulative family project’ in May, 2011. Until now, four simulative families have been set up and sixteen children have been assigned their own ‘home’ and have met their own ‘parents’. The hotel created a humble and nurturing home equipped with modest needs such as the necessary furniture, some electronic equipment and goods for daily use. The ‘parents’ have selflessly dedicated their lives to rearing an adopted family. Their salaries are paid by hotel. Through this new foster format, the hotel hopes that the children can grow and get accustomed to a somewhat more normal lifestyle with a family they can call their own. The sixteen children have enjoyed improvements in physical and mental rehabilitation.

A sheltered workshop was also built by hotel in the institution in 2013. The disabled teenagers of the institution can learn and make handcrafts in the workshop. Hotel holds auctions to sell the handcrafts and donate to the institution. Hotel staff will also open cooking, handcraft, dancing, and painting class regularly for both children and staff there.

“Hotel is always enhancing our corporate social responsibility activities. We will extend more care for those children. At the end of 15 years, the children will be able to look after their own health and will be ready for decent employment based on their own merits.  We will run skills training programmes to entice the young adults to work in the industry and secure a sustainable career for themselves”, said Steven Zhang, general manager.
