Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi Welcomes Children from the Special Care Centre

Abu Dhabi, 11 February 2014 – Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi recently welcomed the children of Special Care Centre (SCC) for a day of interactive fun on the beach, an annual event in its fifth year. The hotel invited 65 children and teachers on 4 February 2014 to the Plaza Bar for a variety of games, refreshments and gifts.

The children were energetic and excited when they were greeted with colourful balloons and warm smiles by the Shangri-La team. The children enjoyed such activities as musical statue, musical chairs and face painting before they were treated to food and refreshments. They were also presented with chocolates, toys and stationery.

“We are delighted to have the children and teachers from the Special Care Centre here with us again. It’s inspiring to see their smiles as they celebrate this exciting day together with our staff,” said Arbind K. Shrestha, general manager at Shangri-La Hotel and Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi.

Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi has been supporting the SCC since the hotel opened in August 2007. The hotel chose the centre as its local charity for all charitable donations and initiatives.

The SCC is an accredited organisation registered with the Ministry of Social Affairs as an establishment for disabled care and rehabilitation. It is a non-profit organisation that relies heavily on donations and volunteers.

The SCC and Shangri-La Hotel have partnered for an initiative of hiring people with disabilities. Sometime around September 2012, three selected SCC senior students, accompanied by the centre’s coordinator and a class teacher – Ms. Kmar Cherif and Ms Susan Johnson – visited the hotel to assess the possibility of the students joining the Shangri-La family.

Among the three students who were evaluated was Indian-born Avinash Mohan, who made it to the training programme. He was required to work as a trainee in the Housekeeping Department for four hours every day, five days a week. For three months since his training commenced on 1 March 2013, he was supervised with constant detailed instructions to help familiarise him with his tasks.

On 1 June 2013, Avinash was given a full-time housekeeping job and, to date, performs well with little supervision. The hotel and the SCC continuously work together on such efforts for the welfare of people with special needs.
