We’re celebrating Passion and Romance in oriental and western vogue. The language of Love is universal, whether it’s East or West. Come dressed to the theme and enjoy the evening’s entertainment from both worlds.
During the time of the Roman Empire, it was allegedly decreed that young couples are prohibited from marrying. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died. All that changed when St Valentines secretly married those young couples, especially those who were listed to fight the war. For that, he was prosecuted and tortured but later honoured as the Patron Saint of Love, making 14 February every year, a day to remember him and to celebrate love.
In the olden days of the Peranakans of Malaysia, Chap Goh Meh, the 15th day of the Chinese Lunar New Year is the day for love matches. Pretty young maidens, all decked up in their nyonya best and will ride in horse drawn carriages across town and if spotted by a young eligible bachelor, his family will send in the matchmaker to seal the match. During this night, young maidens will throw mandarin oranges into the sea to wish for a safe catch, in terms of a husband!
In this rare constellation of the charts, 2 love dates coincide with each other, 14 February being St Valentines Day and Chap Goh Meh. As it is happening in the year of the Horse, SkyBar would like to honour this marriage between East and West, an auspicious day to celebrate love or fall in love.

PERANAKAN or the baba nyonya culture evolved in the 14th century when Chinese traders arrived in Malacca and intermarriages with the local women took place. The Peranakan culture is a unique blend of many cultures — Malay and Chinese, synthesised with elements of Javanese, Sumatran, Thai, Balinese, Indian, Portuguese, Dutch and British cultures, representing “multiculturalism” and “fusion” before the terms were invented.
