Piotr Łobodziński, 31, from Poland, and Suzy Walsham, 43, from Australia, placed first in the male and female elite runner category respectively of the Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run 2016 which took place at Shangri-La at the Fort on August 14, 2016. Łobodziński raced to the top of the 250-meter building in 6 minutes and 20 seconds while Walsham reached it in 7 minutes and 39 seconds.

“I was really happy with my time,” said Łobodziński. “I was expecting to run under seven minutes, so running closer to six minutes is a real surprise.”

Mark Bourne, 33, from Australia, placed 2nd in the male elite runner category with a time of 6 minutes and 44 seconds, followed by Ignacio Cardona, 42, from Spain, who placed 3rd after 7 minutes and 12 seconds.

Hosted by Kerry Sports Manila, Shangri-La at the Fort served as the official venue for this international stair climbing race governed by International Skyrunning Federation and was the first in the Philippines to be included in the 2016 Vertical World Circuit (VWC). It is the 5th leg of the circuit which also includes cities such as London, Dubai, New York, Paris, Sydney, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Runners started from the hotel’s lobby in batches of 12 to 15 runners, with a batch running every three minutes. They ascended 59 floors or 1,353 steps to the penthouse level. Elite runners that participate in the race will gain points based on their ranking in each international leg. These points will be combined to determine the Vertical World Circuit World Champion.

Other categories included an individual challenge category for single runners that ran up all 59 floors; a team challenge category for groups of four members racing up 59 floors; and a fun climb category where beginners ran up 20 floors.

The Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run 2016 was sponsored by Shangri-La at the Fort, ABS-CBN Sports + Action, FOX Sports, De Los Santos Medical Center, Under Armour, Vita Coco, Gatorade and Playerlayer.
