Surabaya, 21 March 2014 – Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya, in cooperation with BKKKS (Coordinating Council for Social Welfare Activity) today celebrated World Down Syndrome Day at Ballroom on 21 March 2014. The event, themed “We Believe in Their Competence to Help Themselves”, was attended by 160 children with Down syndrome from 21 schools and foundations catering to children with disabilities around East Java, such as Pasuruan, Tuban, Batu, Jombang, Sidoarjo, Malang, Pandaan, Gresik and Surabaya.
“This is second year we are supporting this activity; we encourage all to join our activities and events to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities,” said Martin Brenner, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya, in his opening speech.
The activity opened at 6:30 a.m. with a marching band from MI Nurul Huda (an elementary school supported by Shangri-La’s CSR programme), followed by aerobic, a fun walk, tree planting and proper hand-washing activities.
The activities did not stop there, but continued at Ballroom with various programmes, including a kid’s cultural show, fashion show, ballet and entertainment for the children by Surabaya’s famous entertainer and a magician. Games were also part of the programme.
Additionally, a team of psychologists from Surabaya state-owned University of Airlangga, private-owned University of Wijaya Kusuma and Dr. Soetomo Hospital gave free health consultations for families with Down syndrome children. To help raise funds, a garage sale was held for the public. All the proceeds will support children with Down syndrome.
