2017 World Vertical Circuit Returns for a Second Run Up Shangri-La at the Fort with Host Kerry Sports Manila

2017 World Vertical Circuit Returns for a Second Run Up Shangri-La at the Fort with Host Kerry Sports Manila

After 2016’s successful first race, the World Vertical Circuit will be returning to the Philippines for Year 2 of the Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run. This international stair climbing race which circulates iconic cities around the world including Dubai, London, Paris, New York, Beijing, Sydney, Shanghai, Osaka and Hong Kong is scheduled to take place on July 9, 2017 at Shangri-La at the Fort.

Governed by the International Skyrunning Federation, the Vertical World Circuit uses a point system that is based on a participant’s ranking in each leg of the circuit. These points are then tallied at the end of the ten legs to determine the Vertical World Circuit World Champion.

“We are proud to once again bring the Vertical World Circuit to the Philippines and having the stair climbers participating at the Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run,” said John Rice, General Manager of Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila. “We look forward to hosting them and the hundreds of participants who will sign up for this year’s challenge.”

For the Manila leg, runners will once again start at the hotel’s lobby and run up 59 floors to the penthouse level overcoming 1,353 steps to a height of 250 meters. The run will offer five categories:

  • Full Challenge for single runners that will run up all 59 floors. Minimum age for this category is 18 years old with a registration cost of Php 1,500.
  • Team Challenge category provides an opportunity for positive competition and aims to foster encouraging relationships among companies, teammates and friends. Each team consists of four (4) runners, with each runner climbing all 59 floors. The winning team will be calculated by the 3rd runner that crosses the finish line. Registration cost is Php 6,000 for the entire team.
  • Fun Climb category is ideal for beginners and will allow runners to run up 20 floors. Minimum age is 12 years old and cost Php 1,000.
  • Horizon Challenge is a new category ideal for runners looking for a slightly more challenging run by running up 37 floors and costs Php 1,200.
  • Elite category will have professional runners that will participate in each leg around the globe and will climb up all 59 floors. This category is by invitation only.

Last year’s Elite category winners, Piotr Łobodziński from Poland, and Suzy Walsham from Australia, will also be returning again this year to defend their title as Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run Champions. Łobodziński previously raced to the high point of the building in 6 minutes and 20 seconds while Walsham reached it in 7 minutes and 39 seconds.

Stair climbing, first known as “vertical races” in the 1970s, is now a global sport with stair climbing clubs hailing from the US, Canada, Europe and Asia, as well as professional athletes who train year-round to be the first to reach the high point of the buildings. Although still a relatively new sport, stair climbing has quickly caught on with fitness enthusiasts attracted not only by the physical demands of this grueling sport but by also the novelty of competing in unique urban settings.
