Makati Shangri-La, Manila Teams Up with Manila Water to Provide Crystals of Hope for Marginalized Families

Crystals of Hope

Makati Shangri-La, Manila has partnered with Manila Water to assist in providing clean, potable water to residents of Southville 8, an urban poor community in Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal province.

This partnership is launched today, during the hotel’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony, under the theme, Crystals of Hope.  Snow maidens at the lobby will sell clear acrylic snowflakes, signifying crystallized water, in two sizes: small for PHP 250 and large for PHP 350.

Guests may purchase the snowflakes from the hotel’s Crystals of Hope collection throughout the Christmas season, and give the gift of water to a family in need. The P250 snowflake is worth an average of one month’s bill of a family of five in Southville.  This can cover basic household usage such as cleaning, laundry, drinking and taking a shower. Meanwhile, the PHP 350 snowflake is equivalent to an average of 21 cubic meters or 21,000 liters or 5,547 gallons of water.   This can cover more comprehensive usage of water in an average household.

Southville’s residents comprises of previous informal settlers who have been relocated through the National Housing Authority.  Manila Water has been able to install over 9,000 water meters for 90% of the residents. Previously, these households’ source of water came from shallow wells with very poor quality and unsustainable yield.

Makati Shangri-La, Manila has pledged to help provide potable water for the remaining 10% of the families in Southville through its Crystals of Hope endeavor.  All proceeds will go to the water installation for this marginalized community.

“Makati Shangri-La is honored to work with Manila Water in providing potable water to the families in Southville 8,” said Andrew Den Oudsten, the hotel’s hotel manager. “We invite everyone to be a channel of hope by giving Crystals of Hope to your loved ones, or as an addition to your own Christmas décor at home, to symbolize the right that every man, woman or child has – and that is the right to enjoy safe and potable water that can be consumed at any time of day and in all occasion.”

Manila Water’s Group Director for East Zone Business Operations, Mr. Ferdinand Dela Cruzthen added that “We are very privileged that Makati Shangri-La, Manila has chosen our flagship program Tubig Para Sa Barangay or Water for the Community as the beneficiary of its corporate social responsibility project this holiday season. This is a very significant first collaboration and we are looking forward to more meaningful partnerships in the future that will benefit other marginalized communities in the East Zone.”

The theme for the hotel’s Christmas festivities also coincide with the United Nations’ declaration of the year 2013 as The International Year of Water Cooperation.

The aim of this declaration is to raise more awareness and action on the most crucial, basic yet scarcest resource of all: water.  According to the website  http://www.unwater.org/water-cooperation-2013/water-cooperation/en/, the fulfillment of basic human needs, our environment, socio-economic development and poverty reduction are all heavily dependent on water.

Good management of water is especially challenging due to rapid urbanization, pollution and climate change, while demands for water are increasing in order to satisfy the needs of a growing world population for food production, energy, industrial and domestic uses.
