Makati Shangri-La, Manila is now Halal-Certified

Makati Shangri-La, Manila has received the Halal certification on food preparation, following the completion of a dedicated Halal kitchen. The accreditation was issued by the Islamic Da’wah Council of the Philippines, Inc., (IDCP), the only duly and internationally recognized halal accreditation authority in the Philippines.

Halal is an Arabic word meaning what is allowed, lawful and permissible under the Shari’ah, or Islamic law. Lawful in halal is characterized as all things that are good and pure, including halal dietary requirements for Moslems that are acceptable according to Islamic guidelines gathered from the Qu’ran, or the religious text of Islam.

With the growing opportunities from the Middle Eastern market, Makati Shangri-La anticipates these special dietary needs by having a halal-certified kitchen and appointing the hotel’s first halal chef, Noor Izmi Nashrul Idris from Malaysia.

Guests may now enjoy certified halal food in select restaurants in the hotel and in its banqueting facilities. Business and leisure travelers have an option for a customized dining experience with menus that meet their dietary preferences. Whether it is for one diner or for an entire banquet of 1,000 guests or more, the hotel’s culinary team is able to prepare the finest halal food in the city.   

The new 70-square-meter halal kitchen facility is within the hotel. Its design follows the principle that meat and dairy products should not mix. The floor plan is divided into three distinct sections, with one area set aside for meat, a second for dairy, and a third for parve, or items that are neither meat nor dairy.  To complete the facility, each section has its own set of kitchen equipment and utensils, exclusive to the food product prepared in that area.

“Our focus is not just the consistency of our halal food offerings but also the flavor as we bring our cuisine to a wider market,” said Chef Noor Izmi Nashrul Idris, a native of Malaysia who has worked in various luxury hotels in Asia and the Middle East. Chef Noor oversees the hotel’s halal operations and works with a halal-trained kitchen, service and purchasing team in ensuring that the all guidelines are strictly adhered to.
