Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu promotes eco-conservation through the “2018 Maco’s Trash to Art Contest”

Cebu, Philippines, August 28, 2018 – Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu, in partnership with The Freeman, continues to promote eco-conservation through the “2018 Maco’s Trash to Art Contest”. The third of a successful series of similar collaborations with the local publication, the event encourages these values through art and innovation.

Named after the resort’s signature marine character, Maco the Seahorse, the inter-school competition challenged its participants to create the best ocean-themed mural using discarded items like bottle caps, newspapers and plastic bags.

Teams of five from the following local elementary schools were invited to attend:Bagong Silang Elementary School, Marigondon Elementary School, Pusok Elementary School, Lapu-Lapu City Central Elementary School and Bankal Elementary School.

The day-long event held in the Ocean Pavilion included a series of talks from Resident Manager Joost Folkers and the resort’s partner, The Zoological Society of London – Philippines. Cebuano visual artist Bess “Bisai Ya” Sagario of the Artissimo Art House conducted a pre-competition workshop to inspire the young participants.

Entries were judged based on artistic merit and ecological relevance, all of them exhibiting how creative innovation can convert cast-off materials into impressive art pieces and contribute to attaining a sustainable environment in the future.

The team from Bankal Elementary School was hailed the overall winner, with the Pusok Elementary School and Lapu-Lapu City Central Elementary School placing second and third, respectively. All winning teams were awarded gift sets containing art supplies and stainless straws; the champion also won an art workshop at the Artissimo Art House.

Guests can view the 1.2-by-2-meter murals displayed around the resort during the International Coastal Cleanup Drive in September.
