Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu successfully hosted the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines on 4 August 2013. Ironman is part of a series of middle-distance races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation and features a total of 70.3 miles or 113 kilometers, covering a 1.9-kilometer swim, 90-kilometer bike course and 21.1-kilometer run.
The triathlon is the country’s largest annual sporting event, with this year’s race drawing over 2,150 triathletes from 35 countries worldwide and more than a thousand spectators. This is the second year the province of Cebu hosted the event, with the resort as partner venue.
As the partner venue, the resort was the home to the bulk of participating triathletes, headed by 2012 champions Pete Jacobs and Caroline Steffen. The starting and finish lines, as well as the transition areas, were located on the grounds. The athletes’ registration, bike servicing, press conference, race briefings and a four-day expo were located in the resort’s meeting spaces. The resort also hosted a luau-themed carbo‑loaded dinner and outdoor post-race lunch, and the Ironkids triathlon for junior triathletes.
Preparations for the event included the creation of an in-room dining menu and food and beverage offerings tailored to athletes’ dietary requirements. Signature Shangri-La hospitality was also extended in the form of the bike linens provided in all guestrooms, special welcome folders given at check-in and a dedicated help desk in the Main Lobby.
In the days leading up to the race, the resort buzzed with activity. Organizers marked out the race routes, and exhibitors set up their booths. As the triathletes arrived, the main lobby and, later on, the parking lot filled with state-of-the-art racing bikes.
The Meet the Pros press conference was packed with local and national media eager to see the large field of professional triathletes. Adding a bit of musical flair to the event were Australian stage actress Jemma Rix (well-known for playing Elphaba in the Sydney production of the Wicked musical) and apl.de.ap of the Black-Eyed Peas, who regaled the crowd with songs.
apl.de.ap also joined the triathlon’s bike leg as part of a relay team racing to promote awareness of his advocacies, namely, access to education and peace in Mindanao. He was not the only celebrity participating, though; a handful of local personalities had also registered.
Despite the rain early on race day, the event proceeded in an orderly manner. Gun start was at 6:25 a.m. on the beach because the swim was held in the waters off the resort. Transitions went smoothly and the crowds were kept in designated areas. In addition to the entertainment, local celebrities were also spotted among the spectators.
In just under four hours, new Ironman champion Australian Courtney Atkinson was proclaimed.
The triathlon is the latest large-scale event held at the resort, which has demonstrated its capacity to host a variety of events, from conferences and meetings to incentive groups. Its meeting facilities include the Mactan Ballroom and Rosal Ballroom; seven convertible meeting rooms; the Ocean Pavilion, a glass-enclosed architectural masterpiece with a panoramic view of the ocean; and The Marquee, a fully air conditioned tent that spans approximately 1,156 square meters. All function spaces feature the latest audiovisual equipment and are equipped with complimentary wired and Wi-Fi Internet access.
The resort’s sprawling grounds and facilities provide plenty of opportunities for post‑meeting relaxation or corporate teambuilding solutions. Participants can choose to retreat to the sanctuary of CHI, The Spa, enjoy a wide range of gourmet selections in any of the resort’s restaurants or simply unwind on the beach. Organizers can opt to arrange outdoor activities, including themed dinners.
The resort’s dedicated events management team is on hand to ensure a seamless event every time.
