In time for the observance of National Children’s Month this October, Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa, Cebu is organizing a range of activities designed to benefit the schoolchildren of the Tingo Elementary School, under its “Embrace” Care for People Project.
The “Embrace” Care for People Project commits each hotel in the Shangri-La group to a 10- to 15-year partnership with a chosen beneficiary working on children’s health or education programs. In Mactan, the program’s beneficiary is the community of Tingo, located on the island of Olango, which lies directly across from the resort.
Projects are specifically focused on the rehabilitation of the Tingo Elementary School and the welfare of its students. Under the leadership of the resort’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) manager, resort employees regularly volunteer to conduct storytelling sessions and tutorials. They donate books and other learning materials, and work on rebuilding the school’s fences and painting the classrooms. Recently, a new e‑learning center was constructed, with basic computer lessons to be conducted by resort employees. At the beginning of the school year, the resort also donated 450 pieces of classroom furniture.
This October, activities include continuing subject mentoring, the construction of a school canteen and the launching of a scholarship program. The resort will also carry out a medical and dental mission, as well as training in community hygiene and pest control. All Saturdays of the month are dedicated to a feeding program and a children’s cooking camp.
With its involvement in Tingo, the resort hopes to maintain an environment that is healthy and conducive to learning, and allows the children to realize their potential, nurture their skills and secure sustainable careers in the future.
