Biochar Project
Biochar Project

SLCM is helping reduce pollution, generate jobs and support the community with one key ingredient – biochar. Similar to charcoal, biochar is made by burning organic material from agricultural waste which safely stores carbon that can’t easily escape into the atmosphere, helping mitigate climate change. SLCM has partnered with the Warm Heart Foundation to purchase ovens and employ two local youth teams to collectively produce 50 tonnes of biochar. SLCM then donates the biochar to local farmers to use as fertiliser.

GM Gabriele Lombardo said: “Forest fires significantly raise Chiang Mai’s air pollution levels, so we hope more villagers start to see biochar as a viable alternative to burning. They can earn more money by converting husks and stalks into biochar which doesn’t emit PM2.5 particles into the air. Cleaner air leads to better health conditions for the community and in turn more tourists visiting the city."

Earth Day Project
Earth Day Project

Shangri-La Chiang Mai proudly celebrated Earth Day 2024 by hosting engaging activities aimed at fostering community collaboration and environmental awareness.

In the morning, the hotel organized the official opening and handover ceremony of the Community Organic Garden Project at Chareon Prathed Park. This collaborative initiative involved Shangri-La Chiang Mai staff working together to build and plant an organic vegetable garden for the local community to enjoy free produce. The project signifies a commitment to fostering relationships and collaboration with the Chiang Mai Municipality and local residents.

Later in the afternoon, the hotel welcomed local media, hotel guests, and colleagues to join a tree planting ceremony and a unique tea workshop conducted by Mr. Raju Subba, a Tea Master from Araksa Tea Garden. Guests had the opportunity to learn about tea culture and indulge in tasting sessions paired with special snacks. Additionally, Mr. Jern from Slow Hands Studio showcased pottery making, enhancing the artistic and eco-friendly theme of the day.

These activities were designed to raise awareness about Earth Day, encouraging participants to reflect on the importance of Mother Earth and environmental conservation.
