The finals of the “Let’s Get Musical” Song Contest was held on 10 August 2014 at the Bunga Raya Ballroom, Golden Sands Resort. The champions, first runners up and second runners up were selected from two categories: “Wonder Child” for those aged 5 to 9 years old and “Pre Teen Sensations” for older children aged 10 to 12 years old. A total of 10 child finalists vied for the champion position for both categories.
For the “Wonder Child” category, eight-year-old Beh Xing Yi, from Nibong Tebal, Penang emerged the champion with her Mongolian song in Mandarin. She was dressed as a Mongolian lass and galloped around the stage, winning the judges over with her dimpled, winsome smile, dancing skills and strong vocals. First runner up was seven-year-old Teoh Jia Xin, from Nibong Tebal, Penang, who was dressed in a hen costume. She sang a whimsical song about the life of a chicken complete with an earthworm and a basket as props, blending comic timing and humour into her song. Second runner up went to five-year-old Tiffany Ang, from Penang island, who was dressed in a blue snowflake dress and mini tiara. She sang “Let It Go” from the Disney cartoon “Frozen”, charming the crowd with her wide-eyed innocence, confidence, showmanship and sonorous voice.
The champion for the “Pre Teen Sensations” category was twelve-year-old Ng Sue Ean, from Bukit Mertajam, Penang, who got the audience clapping with her ethereal voice which brought Adibah Noor’s inspiring song, “Terlalu Istimewa”, to another level. Spunky ten-year-old Ong Zi Wei, from Penang island, was named first runner up with her rendition of catchy dance number, “Venus”, while another ten-year-old Penangite, Amy Khong, sang her way into the second runner up position with Adele’s feisty “Rolling in the Deep”.
The champion from each category are required to sing the official Adventure Zone and Cool Zone Kids’ Club theme song during a recording session. The two champions from each category won a two nights’ stay for two persons at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore; an Adventure Zone goodie bag, a trophy and a one-hour recording session at a private recording studio each. The first runners up received a two-night stay for two persons at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu, an Adventure Zone goodie bag and a trophy each. The second runners up received a two-night stay for two persons at Golden Sands Resort, Penang, an Adventure Zone goodie bag and a trophy each. Four consolation prizes included a buffet dinner voucher for two at Sigi’s Bar and Grill, an Adventure Zone goodie bag and a trophy each. Aside from Shangri-La’s Hotels and Resorts, other event sponsors were Daniel Chan Studios, The Centre and Libraco Agencies.
Besides the songs by the finalists, there was also belly dancing by young Chloe Lee, a dance session by the young performers from “The Dance Department” to a lively medley of songs, a song and dance routine from the all-girl quartet, “Energetic Little Angels” and a saxophone solo by one of the judges, seasoned musician, Wan Mohd Andare Othman. The soft rock-based, rhythmic, new Adventure Zone song was also unveiled during the event by Daniel Chan and Karen Chan-Hughes, co-organizers of the event, allowing all children present to sing and dance along with Polly, the Adventure Zone mascot.
“This is the inaugural singing contest where we have found the singing talents required to sing our official Adventure Zone song, which was written by our talented Adventure Zone manager, Elsie Francis. The objective of this event is to allow children a platform to express their vocal talents,” said Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman, director of communications for Golden Sands Resort. “This a great channel for children to express their creativity in order to make them all-rounders in their extra-curricular activities,” he added.
