PDK Nusajaya, Gelang Patah Gets Support From Traders Hotel, Puteri Harbour, Johor, Malaysia.

Traders Hotel, Puteri Harbour, Johor, Malaysia has embarked on its five-year journey through EMBRACE, a Shangri-La's Care for People Project in which the hotel commits to a long term partnership with a chosen beneficiary on a children’s health or education programme.  Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK) Nusajaya, Gelang Patah, which caters to children and young adults with Down syndrome and autism, is the chosen beneficiary of the hotel’s corporate social responsibility programme.

At its kick-off programme held at the centre on Tuesday, 11 February 2014, the hotel’s general manager, Sigi Bierbaumer expressed his vision to make the centre ‘an oasis of fun and support’ for its students.

“We are dedicated to promoting activities that will enable these young adults to secure new opportunities for themselves.  For the centre, we hope it will be self-sufficient and fully sustainable in the near future,” Mr. Bierbaumer said.

Strategic programmes and engaging activities, such as outdoor trips, teambuilding exercises, health related clinics, craft-making classes, gardening and environmental activities, are some of the events planned for the five-year programme.  Internship and permanent job offers at the hotel are made available to students, as part of the group’s commitment towards ensuring that at least 2% of permanent staff is made of people with disabilities.  A Culinary Journey programme, aimed at exposing the students to different cultures and foods, has been chosen to kick off this series of initiatives.

The Yee Sang toss was the highlight of the programme, in which both students and teachers took part in this Chinese New Year ritual.  They were earlier entertained by a magic show and a balloon sculpture session before diving into light refreshments provided by the hotel.

PDK Nusajaya, Gelang Patah is located at Jalan Persiaran Nusa Perintis 1, Taman Nusa Perintis 1, 81220 Gelang Patah, Johor under the guidance of Rojitah Misran and the centre’s committee of welfare.
