Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou recently hosted a prestige event at Shang Garden, bringing in local essence – live Kunqu Opera performance, a masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The hotel’s Executive Chef Dale Wang designed a special fusion menu for cocktail, followed by a five-course dinner starting with Prawn Terrine with Asparagus and Lime Olive Oil Dressing, Clear Vegetable Soup in Japanese Style, Oyster Rockefeller, and Grilled Beef Fillet with Foie Gras and Green Peppercorn Sauce to Citrus Mocha as dessert, all of which were matched with fine wines.
Professional actresses played selected scenes from the famous play, The Peony Pavilion, during the event. Guests were impressed by this most exquisite form of Chinese opera that originated in the Suzhou region. It parallels the elegant Shang Garden with greens and blossoms during spring.
Inspired by the architecture of Suzhou Museum, one of I.M. Pei’s works, Shang Garden captures the essence of a Suzhou classical garden with elements of water, rocks, plants and pavilion. The pavilion made from modern materials is the focus of the 700-square-metre garden, while the water feature with goldfish makes the garden alive. This created space of urban scenery is an amicable environment that brings guests in harmony with nature.
Aside from the Kunqu Opera, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou also provides a themed coffee break “Gu Su Style” with live Ping Tan performance in Suzhou dialect. Guests may enjoy one of the top green teas in China, Suzhou’s Bi Luo Chun tea, local snacks and desserts, including one of the local specialties – sweet Euryale Seed soup with Osmanthus. The old-fashioned square tables, local traditional chinaware and decorative red lanterns indulge guests in the essences of Suzhou.
