Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort And Spa, Singapore Drives For Arc And Raises SGD 128,000

After a successful golf fundraiser in 2011, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort and Spa, Singapore once again joined hands with the Sentosa Golf Club and the World Sport Group to “Drive for ARC” on Friday, 23 November 2012, raising SGD 128,000 for the ARC Children’s Centre, a day centre for children with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.

This marks the second year of the resort’s efforts for ARC Children’s Centre; the resort raised S$100,000 for the centre last year.  It is also the seventh consecutive year that the resort has held an annual charity golf tournament in aid of a selected beneficiary.

ARC Children’s Centre was set up in July 2011 to provide care in a joyful and healthy environment for children between three and 18 years of age with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.  The centre also provides emotional and moral support for the siblings and parents of the children at the centre.

The golf tournament took place on the Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course, which hosted top golfers from around the world for the Barclays Singapore Open 2012 just a week earlier.  One hundred and twenty golfers participated in the “Drive for ARC” event and children from the ARC Children’s Centre gave a touching song performance during lunch before the tee-off.  Local celebrity Hossan Leong lent his presence to the afternoon’s programme with a short stand-up comedy and song session.

The golf tournament ended with an award and auction dinner, graced by the attendance of Mrs. Goh Chok Tong, patron of the ARC Children’s Centre and wife of Singapore’s emeritus senior minister, as well as Dr. Rita Yeoh, chairman of the centre.  Items auctioned included autographed golf memorabilia by top golfers such as the world’s number one golfer Rory McIlroy, the Singapore Golf Open 2012 champion Matteo Manassero and runner-up Louis Oosthuizen, as well as accommodation at selected Shangri-La hotels and resorts worldwide.

Together with Ronita Paul and Geraldine Lee, the staff behind the ARC Children’s Centre, Mrs. Goh and Dr. Yeoh were presented with a giant cheque for SGD 128,000 by Mr. Ben Bousnina, general manager of Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort and Spa, Singapore; Mr. Peter Downie, general manager of the Sentosa Golf Club; and Mr. Elliot Murdoch, marketing manager of the World Sport Group.

“We are very touched by the strength of the heroes in the ARC Children’s Centre – the little heroes have shown much bravado in battling their illnesses, and the big heroes who are the carers and the volunteers that make ARC possible.  It is their strength that inspired us to go beyond the annual fundraiser.  To date, our colleagues from various departments have organised four activities with the children this year, in the hope of bringing them joy.  We look forward to more years of fun with the children and their carers at the ARC Children’s Centre,” said Mr. Bousnina.

The funds raised will go towards enriching the lives of more children with life threatening illnesses and their families at the ARC Children’s Centre.
