Local Photographer Shares Arctic Experience Through Photo Exhibition

Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur is the official venue sponsor for Malaysian photographer Bonnie Yap’s first solo photo exhibition of the effects of global warming in the Arctic. The photo exhibition will be held on the hotel’s ground floor throughout March 2014.

In August 2013, Malaysian photographer Bonnie Yap, whose work has gained popularity not just locally but also globally, went on an 18-day trip to the Arctic to capture its beauty on film. What she witnessed was alarming – the detrimental effects of global warning on the Arctic and its habitants. She felt the importance of sharing what she has witnessed to the public through a photo exhibition.

Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur aspires to be the key player in demonstrating innovative ways on how hotels can be a positive force for the environment and the societies affected. Therefore, the hotel is proud to be the official venue sponsor for the photo exhibition.

“Global warming is an issue that affects us all, and we are pleased to be able to be part of a cause that helps promote its awareness,” said Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur’s General Manager Juan Carlos Diago.

“The trip opened my eyes to how fragile the environment there is. We hear a lot about what global warming has done to the landscape and wildlife there, but until you witness it with your own eyes, it will not feel real to you. As a photographer, I feel that the best thing I can do is to capture through my lens and share what I saw and felt at that moment. I hope that it will motivate and inspire others to think about their actions before they do anything that will be detrimental to the environment,” Yap said.

“Despite its icy realm with an impact on the ocean currents, each piece of iceberg has a heartbeat. A crackle or a thud is heard almost every minute, synonymous to the beat of the human heart. It saddens me that every heartbeat I hear tells me an iceberg is about to collapse, melt and eventually disappear into the sea. This is the harsh reality of global warming,” added Yap.

Visitors may purchase Yap’s stunning photographs from the exhibition. All proceeds will be channelled to residents of social organisations under the Assunta Hospital’s Social Welfare Outpatient Programme. Interested individuals or corporate companies interested in purchasing a photograph or two for charity may contact the Concierge Desk at Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Other sponsors, such as Vibrant Productions, E-Six, The North Face and Kilkenny, played an essential role in the logistics required for the exhibition.
