Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur Celebrates World No Tobacco Day

More than 100 staff and guests of Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur took part in the forum and exhibition to commemorate World No Tobacco Day. The event takes place on 31 May every year.

Held at the hotel on 3 June 2014, in collaboration with the Federal Territory and Putrajaya Health Offices, the campaign highlighted the risks associated with tobacco use.

The event began with an address by Mr Manfred Weber, the hotel’s general manager, who advised and encouraged the staff to quit smoking. He also spoke on the benefits of not smoking.

Dr. Inthirani M. Sivarajah, a medical officer with the Kepong Health Office, talked about the dangers and risks of smoking and why smokers should quit their habit. He also explained why people smoke in an interesting and lively session with his audience.

Staff members and guests also visited the “Tips to Quit” clinic booth to find out more on how to quit smoking, picking up brochures and getting advice from the health officers and community nurses there. They learned about the public clinics where they can avail of services to help them quit smoking.

Staff members who smoke also took turns trying out the carbon monoxide analyser, which measured the carbon monoxide level in their lungs due to regular smoking.

World No Tobacco Day ended on a positive note for some smokers who decided to quit and give up their last pack of cigarettes.
