Abu Dhabi, 12 September 2013 – Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi’s head sommelier, Eduardo Perez, successfully came out as first runner up and received the Best Tasting award in the group-wide 2013 Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts Best Sommelier Competition held at Jing An Shangri-La, West Shanghai as part of the first Shangri-La Wine Summit from 29 August to 2 September 2013.
Thirteen sommeliers from Shangri-La hotels around the world were selected in the qualifying round to enter the semi-final on 29 August 2013. Mr. Perez was one of the five sommeliers who entered the final round and competed in front of professional judges, including Master Judge Gerard Basset, who won the 2010 Best Sommelier in the World. Judged according to the international standards of sommelier competitions, Mr. Perez took home the first runner up title, while Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto’s Mark Moffatt and Jing An Shangri-La, West Shanghai’s Jerry Jiao were champion and second runner up respectively.

Fresh from his return from Southeast Asia, Mr. Perez has now set his eyes on Europe to embark on another prestigious title at the Heidelberg Advanced Master Sommelier in September 2013.
Mr. Perez, of Mexican origin, joined Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi in January 2012 to run the overall administration of the hotel’s wine operations. He is also responsible for the success of the hotel’s wine dinners. Prior to joining the Shangri-La family, he held the same post in a prestigious resort in Seychelles.
He has an extensive experience in wine tasting, having worked in New York, San Francisco, Barcelona, Mauritius, Madrid, Seychelles, Doha and Dubai, and having undergone trainings from a three-Michelin star restaurant in Spain.
