International Coastal Cleanup at Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa

SLMU International Coastal Clean-up 2013

As part of Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa’s continued dedication to the global efforts of International Coastal Cleanup®, this past Sunday saw the resort’s CSR team coordinate staff members from each department to contribute to this year’s event. Focusing on the nearby beaches and sea front areas, over 60 hotel employees and management staff gathered for the afternoon to collect waste and clean the shores. For colleagues with diving licenses, the resort’s dive centre provided diving gear so that they could collect any waste from within the waters.

Started by the Ocean Conservancy in 1989, International Coastal Cleanup® is now the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean up waterways and the ocean. Since its launch, and with the help of over nine million volunteers from across the globe, the annual event has been able to remove over 145 million pounds of debris in just under three decades.

Commenting on the event, Mark Kirk, General Manager at Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa said, “We are delighted to have had the chance to once again be a part of such a substantial environmental event. This is just one of the ways in which we continuously try to support both global environmental initiatives and local campaigns through our sustained CSR programme and dedicated committee.” Further CSR initiatives include the resort’s maintenance and upkeep of the nearby Saffanah School’s facilities and the annual participation in October’s Cancer Awareness Walk.
