Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai offers an Asian Experience with an Indian Touch

Mumbai, India, [TK] August 2013 – Nestled in the heart of the city, Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai offers the vibrant city of Mumbai an amalgamation of distinct Asian characteristic blended with contemporary Indian elements. The hotel, which opened in December 2012, resides above the luxurious Palladium Mall and comprises 390 spacious and elegantly appointed rooms, including 32 suites, with stunning views of the city, the Mahalaxmi Race Course and the Arabian Sea.

True to Shangri-La’s global identity, the ambience at the Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai is influenced by local and regional culture and aesthetics. Upon arrival, the hotel’s grand entrance immediately signals the calm and serene environment guests are about to experience. Interiors layered with famous Rajasthani Tikri work and Indian art showcase a colourful blend of Oriental and Indian décor philosophies.

The pathway leading to the entrance of the hotel is decorated with brass metal plaques depicting Vedic scriptures. The unification of the five elements of nature – Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Sky – enhances the welcoming experience and can be seen throughout the interiors of the hotel.

Inside and central to the lobby is the majestic marble staircase, which is laid with a bespoke hand-tufted carpet and grand mirrors adorned with silver leaf frames crafted by artisans from Jaipur and reflecting the 20 glistening chandeliers dotted around. A custom-made work of art displayed in the seating area signifies the golden middle path of Buddha leading to joy, prosperity and enlightenment. The hand-tufted carpets in the lobby and the Lobby Lounge have a regal red patterned inlay that replicates the royalty of European castles.

The stylistic vision of the hotel’s guestrooms, which range from 45 square metres to 270 square metres, exude uber-luxury. They feature traditional Tikri work and delicate decorative artwork from blown glass and mirrors by craftsmen and artisans from Rajasthan. The maple wood bedside table has a unique cracked eggshell finish, while the side tables and dresser cabinets are in veneer. The curtains have an elegant Turkish Topkapi design.

The eye-catching work desk is a 12-millimetre-thick bronze glass bevelled from all three sides. Contemporary in design, the guestroom foyer and the luggage rack are set in Indian cappuccino stone in Herringbone pattern. Completing the experience is a 42-inch high‑definition LED television, a Swedish amenity cabin and an easy-to-use tea kettle.

On Level 10 of the hotel is CHI, The Spa. The reception sports an intricate mosaic pattern, while nine treatment rooms are outfitted in walnut wood and Marketti artwork influenced by contemporary Rajasthan lattice work. The outdoor swimming pool and a fully equipped Health Club on the same level provide sweeping views of the city.

Guests are in for a visual and sensory treat with Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai’s seven restaurants and lounges. Seven, an all-day restaurant, encompasses seven separate kitchen theatres preparing different cuisines from across the world. The sophisticated Ekayana, meaning a ‘place to meet’ in Sanskrit, presents delectable Indian and Lebanese dishes to accompany classic cocktails and eclectic wines. High tea service and light fare are served at the Lobby Lounge, alongside alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments.

For meetings, weddings and social events, the hotel’s stately Shangri-La Ballroom measuring 877 square metres with an adjoining Terrace Garden of over 900 square metres is versatile in accommodating up to 1,000 guests.
