In line with our commitment to the conservation of biodiversity, the group launched Sanctuary, Shangri-La's Care for Nature Project. At Shangri-La Haikou, we work with the Hainan Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve on the protection and propagation of mangrove forests. The hotel has committed to a five-year Mangrove Adoption Project that was launched in 2015.
Since the project started, Shangri-La Haikou, has organised a series of public events focused on raising awareness on the importance of mangrove forests as extremely productive ecosystems that provide numerous goods and services for both the marine life and people in the area. Over the past year, the hotel has planted and nurtured a total of 5,740 saplings with a survival rate of 70%. According to data collected by the reserve, this effort has helped the variety of local bird species increase from 75 in 2014 to 89 in 2015.
