Chinese New Year Afternoon Tea - Revised

Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver ushers in the Year of the Horse with a traditional Lion Dance and special Chinese New Year Afternoon Tea in Xi Shi Lounge. Adding to the festivities, any guest born in a Year of the Horse will receive complimentary afternoon tea.*

The Lion Dance has been a traditional part of Chinese culture for many centuries, and will mark the start of the hotel’s Chinese New Year celebrations on 31 January 2014. Starting at 11:00 a.m., Vancouver-based dance team Shao Lin Hung Gar will perform a traditional Eye Dotting Ceremony and Lion Dance in the lobby of the hotel. From there, the lion dancers will weave their way through the various outlets the hotel, warding off evil spirits, assuring good luck, and collecting Hong Bao – good luck red envelopes – along the way.

Following the Lion Dance, guests can make their way to Xi Shi Lounge for a special Chinese New Year Afternoon Tea. Available from 31 January 2014 until 14 March 2014, guests can enjoy a tea tower comprised of various savoury items, including BBQ pork brioche buns, curried tofu and almond wraps, duck spring rolls, and smoked salmon bagels with yuzu mayonnaise. Sweets include: coconut rice cake, a twist on the traditional Nian Gao; egg tart; black sesame rice balls in ginger soup; and green tea opera cake; as well as afternoon tea classics like butter and orange infused scones with housemade clotted cream and a selection of jams. Chinese New Year Afternoon Tea will be available daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for CAD$38 per person. The tea service includes loose-leaf tea or guests can opt for premium Chinese blossoming tea for an additional CAD$5 per person.

While enjoying the flavours of the afternoon tea, a variety of live Chinese music and entertainment, including traditional pipa and ruan soloists, will be available in the lounge Monday through Wednesday, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
