Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang recently sponsored surgery for two children under the resort’s “Embrace Gift of Life” programme. The children – five-and-a-half-month-old Nur Damiya binti Md. Tarmizi Umar and nine-month-old Ang Zhen Shang – were recipients of life changing surgery at the Gleneagles Medical Centre.
Nur Damiya was born with a congenital heart condition known as ventricular septal defect. Surgery costing MYR38,000 was required to repair an interrupted arch and a hole between the two pumping chambers of her heart. Ang Zhen Shang was a young heart patient with ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defect. The total surgical cost to fix both defects was MYR35,000.
Elaine Yue, the resort’s general manager, presented mock cheques to the families of the children; each received MYR25,600. Each child was also given a MYR500 hamper containing baby products and MYR300 pocket money.
Present were Elizabeth Liew, the resort’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) manager, and Rahim Flynn, Resident Manager. The Gleneagles Medical Centre was represented by Aileen Foo, public relations/marketing manager, and Henry Cheah, patient business executive.
“The resort contributed a total of over MYR52,000 last year to three children – two‑year‑old Siti Aishah, one-year-old Nur Syifaa and one-year-old Kingsley Leow. Nur Damiya and Zhen Shang are our fourth and fifth recipients under the ‘Embrace Gift of Life’ programme. We hope to help more needy children in the future,” said Ms Yue.
