Mumbai conversations

Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai

Each One Teach One (EOTO) is a charitable foundation established in 1983 that aims at creating opportunities for underprivileged children in rural and urban India. Over a period of time, more than 8,000 children in urban and rural India have passed through the EOTO journey.

The foundation enriches the lives of children by strengthening their intellectual and emotional capabilities and providing them with quality education.

Since April 2011, we have partnered with Shishuvihar School in Dadar, which is supported by EOTO. Under this initiative, we conduct classes to help improve the level of conversational English of its 9th and 10th grade students. A monthly calendar for interaction with the students is followed by the Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai team members. It includes various topics that are covered with the students through activities and games in every session, with emphasis placed on spoken English.

These interactions not only enhance the students’ interpersonal skills, but also help nurture their overall personal development.

Starting on the right note

The day the hotel's doors opened to welcome its first guests, we wanted to ensure that it was also a truly a memorable day for our Each One Teach One foundation students. On 19 December 2012, 17 school students, along with EOTO’s founder and chief operating officer, were invited for lunch at our hotel’s all-day dining restaurant – Seven. The memorable experience began with the hotel cars picking up the students from school. They continued to experience the legendary Shangri-La hospitality as they were greeted by members of the hotel's executive committee and other team members from the hotel at the Porte Cochere.

They were then ushered to the hotel lobby before being escorted to Seven, where they were introduced to the sumptuous spread of delicacies from all across the globe. As a piece of parting memorabilia, each of the students were presented with a group photograph that was taken at the Porte Cochere. For us at Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai, this was yet another successful and heart-warming interaction with EOTO – our Embrace partner.

Educational workshops

To create hand-washing awareness amongst our EOTO children, a team of hotel colleagues along with our hygiene manager visited Shishuvihar School on 15 October 2012. Through a presentation, we spoke to the students from 5th to 10th grades about correct hand-washing techniques, which are easy to learn and practice. A fun quiz was conducted and a few of our colleagues rehearsed a skit to educate the students on the positive effects of proper hand-washing.

Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai donated and installed six liquid soap dispensers in the school’s washrooms and now provides monthly supply of soap solution to replenish these dispensers.
