Edsa Shangri-La, Manila recently took part in the worldwide, annual celebration of Earth Hour with a host of activities at the hotel’s Lobby Lounge. A “Children’s Parade of Lights” featuring 100 children from Isla de Cocomo, the hotel’s adopted nursery in Barangay Mauway, Mandaluyong City and the “Ride for the Planet,” wherein over 40 of the hotel employees’ Bikers Club circled the streets leading to the hotel wearing glow-in-the-dark shirts to help spread awareness, were the evening’s highlights.
General Manager, Mr. Patrick Schaub and Ms Menchi Abalos, wife of Mandaluyong City Mayor Benjamin Abalos, Jr., led the evening’s festivities, pulling down on a “Big Switch” to turn off most of the lights in the hotel that lasted for an hour. This signified Edsa Shangri-La, Manila’s continued dedication in caring for the environment. Guests, who were checked in the hotel, also took part by turning off their lights during the scheduled 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m observance.
“We are greatly invested in doing our part to ensure that future generations enjoy life through the wonders of nature,” said Schaub. “From coastal clean-up projects, proper waste segregation and management, water recycling and energy conservation through our solar panels, Edsa Shangri-La, Manila takes an active role in socially relevant and sustainable activities.”
In a report submitted by the hotel’s Engineering team, up to 720 kilowatts of electricity was saved during the Earth Hour initiative which is equivalent to providing the lighting energy requirement for 8,000 houses.
Each child that joined in the “Parade of Lights” carried a lit candle placed in candle holders handmade by the inmates from New Bilibid Prison, the national penitentiary. The lighted candles signify how a small light could be the difference in creating a brighter tomorrow.
Edsa Shangri-La, Manila, through its employees’ Bikers Club, also showed its support for Earth Hour with its “Ride for the Planet”—circling the streets leading to the hotel wearing glow-in-the-dark shirts. The “race” helped spread awareness among passersby some of which proceeded to the hotel to join the program at the Lobby Lounge.
As part of this year’s campaign: “What are you willing to do to save the planet?,” guests and colleagues shared how they can contribute through the “Promise to the Planet.” The messages were written on the hotel’s iPads and displayed on its social networking pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #EarthHourESL to reach a wider audience. Special Earth Hour t-shirts were also on sale with the proceeds donated to the World Wildlife Fund and the upkeep and refurbishment of Isla de Cocomo’s school.
