Edsa Shangri-La, Manila Celebrates Earth Hour with Parade of Lights

Edsa Shangri-La, Manila recently joined the world in celebration of Earth Hour with a “Parade of Lights” at its newly-renovated Lobby Lounge. One hundred children from Isla de Cocomo, the hotel’s adopted nursery in Barangay Mauway, Mandaluyong City, made their way to the Lobby Lounge from the hotel’s second level with lit candles that symbolize how even the smallest act of conservation could help create a brighter tomorrow for all.

Hotel general manager Patrick Schaub led the festivities together with Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos, Jr.’s Chief of Staff and Chief of Public Information Office, Jaime Isidro, by pressing down on a “Big Switch” to turn off most of the lights within the hotel at 8:30 p.m. This act signifies the hotel’s commitment in helping protect and preserve the environment. Checked-in guests also took part in the celebration by switching off the lights in their rooms during the world wide Earth Hour of 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The hotel estimates to save up to 720 kilowatts of electricity with this initiative, which is equivalent to providing the lighting energy requirement of up to 4,000 houses.

Guests were also encouraged to do their part and share in the Earth Hour celebration by posting photographs on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and tagging @edsashangrila and using #EarthHour and #UseYourPower.

A silent auction was also held during the Earth Hour celebration, with 10 colorful paintings specially created by the children of Isla de Cocomo under the guidance and tutelage of famed Filipino artist Fernando Sena who was on hand at the hotel earlier during the day to share his passion for art with the young minds of the nursery.

All proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to Isla de Cocomofor its continued refurbishment of classrooms, and provision of books and school supplies.

Earth Hour is a global World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) climate change initiative. With the combined efforts of over 80 Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, it is estimated that the entire company will be able to save up to 60 megawatts of electricity, which is equivalent to providing the lighting energy requirements of a city of 500,000 residents for 24 hours.
