Addu, in fact, boasts the largest population in Maldives outside the capital city of Malé, but tourism development of this southern atoll was minimal in the past. Since its construction, Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives has been able to provide assistance to local community initiatives and opportunities to local industry.
Local Farmer’s Co-operative
Local farmers of fruits and vegetables supply the resort with fresh produce on a weekly basis. The resort’s culinary and purchasing teams have been instrumental in developing a successful business relationship with the farmers, which saw the formation of a co-operative society in order to better coordinate their production.
For the initiative Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives, has been awarded with a silver medal at the World Responsible Business Awards 2015.
School Leaver’s Apprenticeship Programme
As the premier luxury hospitality establishment in Addu, the resort is in a unique position to provide experience to aspiring young hoteliers. Up to nine young Adduans at a time receive placement in our apprenticeship programme, wherein they receive 18 months of on-the-job training and a Shangri-La certificate in hospitality.
Since December 2012, when we received our first intake of apprentices, young people recommended by the local city council that left school for one reason or another, our progamme has served as a stimulating introduction to the hospitality industry.
Football Academy with Feydhoo School, Feydhoo
As football is the number one sport in the country, the resort has chosen to encourage and support local students by establishing a training ground with professional coaching from national football players. Training is open for students in grades one through ten. The goal of the initiative is to rehabilitate and train youth with football, ultimately developing them into professional-level players.
Special Education at Sharafuddion School, Hithadhoo
Our partnership with Al-Noor Centre in Sharafuddin School intends to develop a classroom and occupational therapy centre for children with special needs who require education in Addu City. Disabilities include Autism, Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Down Syndrome.
In December 2012, Shangri-La Hotel, Maldives' Sous Chef held the first cooking demonstration on Meedhoo to showcase dishes using fruits and vegetables grown by the island’s farmers. The intention behind the project is to increase the popularity of non-traditional foods in local households so that the farmers can expand their market base.
Currently the resort’s chefs regularly hold cooking sessions for local women to teach them how to use the vegetables and fruits to make healthy meals for their families.
We offer various ways for our guests to experience different aspects of the Addu communities. As part of our work with the Farmer’s Co-operative, we undertake tours of the farms on Meedhoo, with some of the proceeds going to the co-operative for use in farming development.
