Established in 1978, this home used to be a clinic for leprosy patients until the late 1990's. As the number of patients with leprosy started to decline, the facility extended its services to persons with special needs. Clients usually have intellectual or physical disabilities. Currently, the facility provides shelter to 160 patients, many of whom fall in the age group of 45-60 years old. Most of the care workers and cleaners are hired from the local community on the island, a population of 1,500 residents, thereby providing job opportunities for the community which otherwise has few income sources.
Traders Hotel, Maldives, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, pledges to work with the facility in educating people about proper hygiene, sanitation and garbage disposal.
