Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver Ocean Wise

Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver is the newest partner of the Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise™ Program, a national Canadian conservation initiative to educate and empower consumers about sustainable seafood.

The decision to become 100 percent “Ocean Wise” is a natural one for the hotel, aligning with Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts’ Sustainable Seafood Policy, introduced in 2012. Whether guests are dining in MARKET by Jean-Georges, Xi Shi Lounge, hosting a catered event in a banquet room, or enjoying the in-room dining services, the Ocean Wise designation reassures guests that they are making ocean-friendly seafood choices.

“The staples of West Coast cuisine are fresh seafood and shellfish, and we are fortunate to have an abundance of those products,” said Wayne Harris, executive chef at the Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver. “We are proud to more visibly demonstrate our commitment to the long-term health of our fisheries and oceans. Ocean Wise is a respected, award-winning program, and we’re honoured to be a part of it.” 

“Working with the Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver team to bring the hotel and its restaurant to Ocean Wise standards has been a seamless process,” says Teddie Geach, coordinator of the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program. “The hotel and its banquet and restaurant already had solid sustainable practices, so adopting recommended sustainable seafood choices was an easy transition. That said, only four hotels in Canada have become 100 percent Ocean Wise, so we applaud the efforts made by Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver and we look forward to our continued partnership.”

The Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise program began in 2005 to address the single biggest threat our oceans face today: overfishing. An estimated 90 percent of all large, predatory fish are already gone from the world’s oceans. Look for the Ocean Wise symbol next to a seafood item for the Vancouver Aquarium's assurance of an ocean-friendly seafood choice. Ocean Wise works with more than 465 partners across Canada at more than 3,100 locations.
