Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore’s Festive Store Takes The Shape Of A Giant Gingerbread House

Guests will enjoy the novelty of festive retail therapy at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore’s three-meter-high Gingerbread House. Constructed using 9,625 real gingerbread tiles, the shop is packed with festive goodies and candies. In the true spirit of Christmas, proceeds from the sale of Shangri-La teddy bears and “Touched By An Angel” chocolates will support the Make-A-Wish Foundation® (Singapore) and Bayanihan for the Philippines, a fundraising campaign Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has launched.

Usually eaten as a holiday indulgence, spiced gingerbread houses became an icon because of the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. In honour of this tradition, the pastry team at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore has created a three-metre gingerbread house handcrafted with 9,652 pieces of real gingerbread tiles, 32 litres of milk and 200 kilograms of icing sugar. After 25 days of detailed planning, the pastry chefs worked round the clock for 48 hours, with six chefs per shift, to complete the structure.

The spirit of giving comes alive at the Gingerbread House with two charity items for sale. Shangri-La doorman teddy bears priced at S$20 each will be sold at the Gingerbread House and at the hotel’s restaurants and bars. For every bear purchased, S$10 will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® (Singapore) to help fulfil the wishes of children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses.
Half of the proceeds from the sale of “Touched By An Angel” chocolates will support Bayanihan for the Philippines. Funds will support the relief, rebuilding and rehabilitation operations in Daanbatayan, an area about 140 kilometres north of Cebu. Each chocolate is priced at S$12.

Guests can visit the Gingerbread House to purchase festive goodies and hampers from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Christmas Day, 25 December 2013.
