Gourmet at Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai will launch Cronuts on 15 January 2014, making the hotel the first to introduce this popular pastry product to the city, even to the country.
In 2013 a new fusion food joined the ranks of the ice cream cake and the turducken. The cronut—made of croissant-style pastry that is fried like a doughnut, filled with cream and topped with glaze—has transfixed foodies and was classified as one of the 25 best inventions in 2013 by TIME Magazine.
Bearing the looks of a doughnut and the inner workings of a croissant, this confectionary hybrid has become a near-global sensation after it was first invented in New York. Fans spanned across the world from Berlin to Singapore, making it the most virally talked about dessert item in history.
Gourmet will offer a range of seven cronuts flavors – Lemon Cream with Raspberry, Chocolate and Brownie, Apple Crumble, Cherry Compote with Cranberry, Blueberry Filling with Pistachio and Chocolate and Cookies and Vanilla Cream.
The highlighted variant - will be the Green Tea flavor that the pastry chef has specially designed for Asian people, adapting it to local taste buds. This bold try of flavor again echoes the original concept of the product – a hybrid of croissant and doughnut - in this case, a blend of East and West. With a wide variety of colourful and delicate decorations on top, an individual Cronuts is available for RMB18.
