This May, Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong will celebrate the taste of France during Le French GourMay, an annual French food and wine festival organised by the French Trade Commission in Hong Kong. The spotlight this year is on Rhône Valley Wines and Lyon culinary delights. Shang Palace, Nadaman, Tapas Bar, Café Kool and Lobby Lounge will present a series of authentic French wining and dining experiences throughout this widely anticipated festival in town.
“Chinese and Japanese cuisines are also renowned for their long culinary history, so it would be interesting and exciting to experience the match of these exquisite cuisines with delicate French wines. It’s also a great opportunity for our guests to savour French delights in our buffets and at Tapas Bar,” said French native Executive Chef Gael Moureau.
“Rhône wines are regarded as an important accompaniment to food in Lyon. I have carefully selected a few varietals to complement each dish for our guests’ enjoyment,” said Ringo Lam, sommelier.
Throughout May 2014, Shang Palace will present a tailor-made “East meets West” wine pairing dinner menu featuring Cantonese delicacies and four glasses of fine wines from Cave Yves Cuilleron in the northern Rhône Valley.
Special menu highlights include Braised Winter Melon with Bean Curd and Mushrooms complemented with Saint Joseph Lyseras Blanc, Y. Cuilleron 2012 and Sautéed Spotted Garoupa Fillet with Bitter Marrow and Lily Bulbs in Black Bean Sauce matched with Vin de France Syrah, Les Vignes d’a cote, Y. Cuilleron 2012.
Guests can also enjoy Roasted Lamb Chop with Cantonese Sweet Vinegar and Guinness Sauce accompanied by Cote Rotie Madiniere, Y. Cuilleron 2007 and Crispy Fried Pastry with Lotus Seed Paste served with Vin de France Roussillère, Y. Cuilleron 2012.
The seven-course dinner menu is priced at only HK$1,180 per person with wine pairing or HK$690 per person for food only.
For one night only on 28 May 2014, Chef Kojima at Nadaman Japanese restaurant brings diners a fine Japanese gourmet experience complemented by selected varietals from Maison Brotte. Guests can savour a specially designed five-course wine pairing dinner menu at only HK$1,080 per person.
Featured dishes include Homemade Sweet Corn Custard with Goose Liver Miso Sauce paired with Crozes Hermitage, La Rollande Blanc, Brotte 2011; Fresh Sea Bream Carpaccio with Spring Cabbage served with Condrieu, Versant Dore, Brotte 2011; Grilled Fresh Tilefish Fillet and Bamboo Shoots served with Green Pea Sauce and Traditional Oyaki Cake with Cheese Risotto accompanied by Tavel, Les Eglantiers Rose, Brotte 2012; Braised Wagyu Beef Belly with Soybean Paste and Simmered Japanese Radish and Carrot matched with Gigondas Vieilles Vignes, Brotte 2009; and Homemade Tomato Mousse with Seasonal Fruit served with Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, Brotte 2011.
A representative from the winery will be present to share his in-depth knowledge about the winery’s viticulture.
From 1 to 31 May 2014, a great variety of Lyonnaise tapas is available from only HK$75 at Tapas Bar. Lyon is known as “the capital of French food’’ with its fresh produce and highly rated culinary wonders.
Guests can look forward to exquisite bite-sized tapas creations, such as Lyon Deli Platter, Dandelion Salad with Poached Egg, Sautéed Frog Legs with Rosette de Lyon and Deep-Fried Lyon Pastries. A selection of red and white wines from the Côtes du Rhône region will be on offer by the glass and by the bottle.
For the whole month of May, diners can relish an authentic array of French favourites at Café Kool. The buffet is available during dinner at HK$518 per adult and HK$428 per child. A dedicated Rhône wine package is designed to complement the dining enjoyment.
A range of traditional French classics and pastries is on offer during the afternoon tea buffet on weekends and public holidays (except on 10 and 11 May 2014) from 1 – 5 p.m. between 1 and 31 May 2014. The themed buffet is priced at only HK$308 per adult and HK$258 per child. Guests can also enjoy 50 per cent off the second glass on selected Rhône wines.
