Café Kool at Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong Offers The Best of Sandakan

Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong has invited three Malaysian guest chefs, Kuneh Binti Sumpat, Haron Muzaffar Abdul Aziz and Chong Vui San, to present a week-long Sandakan food promotion at Café Kool from 21 to 27 September 2013.  Guests are invited to enjoy an extensive dinner buffet of authentic Sandakan dishes at regular buffet prices.

Located on the north-eastern coast of Borneo Island, Sandakan is the second-largest city in Sabah, East Malaysia.  In the early part of the 19th century, Sandakan was popularly known as Little Hong Kong because many of the earlier Chinese settlers actually came to Sandakan from Guangdong province via Hong Kong.  Sandakan’s coastal location is an important attribute of its abundant resources for a large variety of seafood.

The guest chefs at Café Kool will bring diners the inimitable flavours of Sandakan through authentic dishes featuring a diverse range of spices, aromatic herbs and roots from the region.

The buffet will include an expansive menu featuring a number of traditional Sandakan favourites.  Appetisers range from Banana Bud Salad and Sea Bird’s Nest Salad to Hinava Shrimp, Prawn Roll with Bambangan Dressing, Sambal Belgacan (Chili Shrimp Paste), Ikan Bilis (Anchovies), Sotong Kangkung (Squid and Kong Xin Chai drizzled with Peanut Sauce), and Bitter Gourd Hinava and Mackerel.

Popular soup and noodle choices include Mee Suah (Shrimp Soup), Bak Kut Teh (Pork Ribs in an Herb and Spice Broth), Laksa (Noodles and Condiments in Spicy Coconut Milk Broth), Sandakan Spring Noodles and Soto (Chicken Noodles).

Patrons can also head to the entrée station for Ikan Panggang (Grilled Fish), Asam Curry Fish Head, Steamed Prawns and Sabah Lo Tun Garouper with Superior Soy Sauce, Soft-Shell Crab, Wok-Fried Crab with Sambal, Kam Heong Crab, Fried Butter Prawn, Oxtail Asam Pedas, Mui Heong Far Lam (Braised Pork), Ayam Bakar (Barbequed Chicken), Beef Masak Hitam (Beef cooked with Dark Soy Sauce) and Three-Flavoured Chicken.

The dessert kitchen is laden with exotic sweet foods, such as Sandakan UFO Tart, Jackfruit and Banana Spring Roll, Chee Tan Cha (Herbal Tea with Braised Egg) and Bahulu (Malaysian Cake).
