Puteri Harbour, Johor, Malaysia has embarked on its five-year journey through
EMBRACE, a Shangri-La's Care for People Project in which the hotel commits to a
long term partnership with a chosen beneficiary on a children’s health or
education programme. Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK) Nusajaya, Gelang Patah,
which caters to children and young adults with Down syndrome and autism, is the
chosen beneficiary of the hotel’s corporate social responsibility programme.
At its kick-off programme held at the centre on Tuesday, 11 February
2014, the hotel’s general manager, Sigi Bierbaumer expressed his vision to make
the centre ‘an oasis of fun and support’ for its students.

Strategic programmes and engaging activities, such as outdoor
trips, teambuilding exercises, health related clinics, craft-making classes,
gardening and environmental activities, are some of the events planned for the
five-year programme. Internship and permanent job offers at the hotel are made
available to students, as part of the group’s commitment towards ensuring that
at least 2% of permanent staff is made of people with disabilities. A Culinary
Journey programme, aimed at exposing the students to different cultures and
foods, has been chosen to kick off this series of initiatives.
Yee Sang toss was the highlight of the programme, in which both students and
teachers took part in this Chinese New Year ritual. They were earlier
entertained by a magic show and a balloon sculpture session before diving into
light refreshments provided by the hotel.
