Shangri-La Hotel, Haikou Launches Mangrove Conservation Charity Programme

Haikou, 15 November 2014 – Shangri-La Hotel, Haikou has launched “CARE for Mangroves”, a charitable programme pioneered by the hotel’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) team to support mangrove conservation in the north-eastern coastal regions of Hainan Island, China.

The hotel has committed to a five-year cooperation with Hainan Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve for the planting and adoption of 7 acres of mangroves. Since the first mangrove conservation charity sale organized, the hotel has started a brand-new journey for its Sanctuary: Care for Nature Project.

Shangri-La Hotel, Haikou also held a charity sale at Wanghai Shopping Plaza, one of the popular local high-end shopping malls. The hotel prepared 1,000 pieces of cookies and cakes, all of which were sold out within an hour. It also made a 1.2-metre Fruit Cake painted with mangroves and the hotel’s name, and handwritten with “We are Hainan people; to protect mangroves is to protect our homeland.” Local college students volunteered to spread the message of protecting the mangroves. More than 5,000 people paid attention to the mangrove campaign.

“The charity sale shows our responsibility to environmental protection for our homeland. We cordially invite more individuals and enterprises to join us and make our contribution to protect mangroves,” said Hotel General Manager Jordan Xu, who attended the charity sale ceremony.

Shangri-La Hotel, Haikou has planned to launch a series of charity events for mangrove conservation, kicking off with a “Care for Mangroves” donation during the hotel’s Christmas Lighting Ceremony and Christmas Charity Sale in the hotel’s lobby on 26 November 2014.
