At a Glance
The economic capital city and gateway to Myanmar, Yangon is cool and green with lush tropical trees, shady parks and beautiful lakes. The city was founded by King Alaungpaya on the site of a small settlement called Dagon when he conquered lower Myanmar in 1755. The name Yangon, which means "end of strife", was changed to Rangoon when the British annexed Myanmar in 1885. The city was renamed Yangon in 1988.Plug Type

Visas
Visitors to Myanmar must have a valid passport and obtain a 28-day tourist visa from a Myanmar Embassy or diplomatic mission abroad. Two application forms and 3 passport-size photos are needed. Fee is approximately USD 20 in local currency.

Currency
The Myanmar kyat (MMK) is the official currency. Though the kyat is subdivided into 100 pyas, pya coins are uncommon, and instead, notes of up to 5,000 kyat are most commonly used. Public Health

Yellow fever certification is required for entry to Myanmar if the traveller arrives within 9 days after leaving or transiting through areas where Yellow Fever is present. Vaccinations against cholera, hepatitis A and B and malaria are also recommended.

Caution must be exercised when eating raw and uncooked food. Drink only bottled water. Traders Hotel will arrange for a doctor as necessary. Additionally, international clinics such as AEA operate in Yangon. While tap water at Traders Hotel, Yangon is suitable for drinking, complimentary bottled drinking water is also available in every hotel room.

Dress
Generally, light casual is appropriate year round in Yangon. A light sweater is useful between October and February, especially when visiting upper Myanmar. An umbrella is always good to have. Sandals or slip-on shoes are convenient, as all footwear must be removed when entering pagodas and monasteries. Visitors should not wear shorts when visiting pagodas and monasteries.
