Exploring Tokyo
Asakusa

Well known for its ancient Buddhist temples, Asakusa is an important part of downtown Taito district in Tokyo. Most travellers both local and international visit this exceptional destination in great numbers due to its renowned Sensoji Temple, the famous Five Storied Pagoda and the unique Nakamise shopping arcade. Asakusa is also immensely popular for its vibrant traditional festivals.

During the 20th century Asakusa was Tokyo’s main entertainment district and the most prosperous years of it are clearly described in the novel Scarlet Gang of Asakusa by Kawabata. This enchanting destination is located at the north-east edge of central Tokyo towards the east side of Ginza subway line. Asakusa is excellently positioned a mere one mile from the Ueno railway-subway interchange. As the name implies, this beautiful district in Taito features a noteworthy traditional Japanese ambience than most other Tokyo neighbourhoods.

Asakusa abounds with numerous historic sites and places of interest and as a result of being home to many temples, the district boasts a large number of religious festivals that take place throughout the year.  The most popular festival however is the Sanja Matsuri held in May each year.  The large number of stores selling traditional domestic kitchenware is also a unique attraction of Asakusa. A majority of these shops are located on Kappabashi-dori and are visited frequently by Tokyoites in order to fulfil their essential supplies.

Yet another exciting place to visit in Asakusa is the temple grounds of Sensō-ji which is constantly animated with carnivals, rides, games and nearby theatres showing traditional Japanese films. Sumida River cruises are also a much loved activity in this exceptional destination. The best way to experience the wonders of this magical Taito district is to stay at a nearby hotel such as Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo in order to make the journey much more convenient and memorable.
